About Us
From “The Necessary Revolution” by Peter Senge et al, p 251:
We often find that most sustainability advocates fall into one of two camps: Either they think that the reasons to change are so clear and compelling that anyone awake must be on board, or they look at the enormous gap between what is and what is needed and become cynical, arguing that the changes needed will never occur or demonizing those who preserve the status quo. In between are a smaller number who have both a passion for the vision and an understanding of the need to build the collaborative networks the vision requires.
The overarching goal for our organization is to be one of the latter. We are an umbrella organization of non-profit community groups, sustainability-minded businesses, and individuals devoted to acting as an advocate for sustainability within Columbia, Missouri, and the surrounding area. Our members have a shared desire to advocate for the community aspects of sustainability such as urban gardens, efficient transportation, and local food sourcing. It’s our vision that sustainability will be achieved through tapping into the power of traditional and modern social networks. We hope to bring together groups that are practicing aspects of sustainability to other groups that have an interest in assuring that Columbia and the surrounding area will continue to thrive for generations.
